Do you think your school is going to delay or close tomorrow?

Our students will continue to experience lack of educational continuity and academic disruption, and continue to fall ever-so-slowly behind their school counterparts in regions where snow days are few - either because those regions invest in the equipment, resources, and workforce to deal with an inhospitable winter climate (MN, WI), or because they have great weather (CA).

By the way, our regional failure to develop the resources, invest in the equipment, and hire the personnel necessary to deal with a winter climate, has the potential to depress economic growth in the region.

Please run for something. If this was the entirety of your platform, I'd happily be your campaign manager. The annual DMV snowpocalypse isn't funny anymore. It's embarrassing and hugely damaging.

It is just a few days, people. The county builds in 4 snow days, as do most private schools who choose to follow MoCo. We are going to run 2-3 over this year in MoCo - FCPS is still under. Private schools in MoCo I believe have to hold 170 days of school, and they will add more in if we fall short. We have many school years where we do not use all of our snow days, and we don't see any major educational boon to our students. It does not make sense to invest the economics into more weather clearing equipment until we hit a point when we consistently see this many snow days EVERY year. Frankly, it is more cost effective for us to build in more snow days.

My kids go to a private that follows FCPS and they get out the end of May. I don't think there are any snow days built in, in fact they are getting ready to have a 10 day spring break. I honestly do worry about how much time has been missed.

It is just poor planning if they build in no snow days. We have snow days every year. They know FCPS builds in 12 and uses them liberally. Why would you follow the county and not account for the extra days? Either based on the hours they can hit the minimum with the days you have had, or they really did not plan well. Most years there are a few snow days. This isn't even on the outrageous end this year.

I was wondering about the Maret, NCS, Beauvoir, GDS. I think they actually all decide together. Anyone know which way their school is heading for tomorrow?

I'm really hoping our school closes. My neighborhood is pretty treacherous

I'm wondering the same question. I'm hoping that given all of the public school closures (with the exception of dcps right now) that they will decide the close. I'm sure that we'll all get the email at around 5:30-6, though.

I heard that the Cathedral schools (St. Albans, NCS, and Beauvoir) decide together. Not sure why they would discuss with GDS or Maret, or why GDS and Maret would confer.

I'm not sure, but I suppose that they're all colleagues in some form or another. The schools are also relatively close to each other. The GDS Head of school informed the school community that Heads from "Maret, St. Albans, NCS, St. Patrick's, and Washington International School" all conference to make their determination . Further, the schools all use weather reports, decisions by DC, Virginia, and Montgomery County public schools to inform their decision.

They decide together.

Back to the original question, what do you all think is going to happen tomorrow at the independent schools?
Anonymous
Saw that DCPS is closed tomorrow. Only mentioning because I think privates in DC will soon follow.

The privates have a call in the morning (or night before depending on the situation). They can make whatever call they want but they do confer.

Poor Beauvoir has a big kid event tomorrow, my DC will be really bummed if it's postponed.

GDS has a big STEM conference tomorrow, co-hosted with EL Haynes (a DC Charter that hasn't announced its plans yet either). It's an annual thing that brings a lot of people in, so I assume they won't want to call it off unless they absolutely have to. DC was looking forward to hearing the keynote speaker(s).

I too always thought the in town NWDC privates all decided together (the ones a PP listed + a few) but we have kids at different schools and school A had closed status listed last night by about 9:30 pm whereas school B called before 6am today. That was annoying - couldn't they have let us all sleep in? Everyone knew the schools would be closed today.

With the big over night freeze coming I think they will be closed again tomorrow. Plus our street in NWDC is impassable. Haven't seen a plow today.
