Bowie elementary schools

I saw some issues, mostly with parents (popular, cliquish PTA moms running the show and some teachers and administrators playing into the shenanigans). The good thing is that the bar for achievement and behavior was set high, and kids seemed to adhere to it, for the most part. But too much inappropriate talk about who was smart and who wasn't, who lived in the boundary and who didn't, and lot of social drama. Despite that, my child has fond memories of the school.

Tulip Grove has a new principal ... Was your experience with the previous principal? There is also a new PTA president that seems very inclusive. We love Tulip Grove. It is a nurturing learning environment. Many high achievers but strong differentiated instruction. Children are expected to behave appropriately as a result the learning environment is calm. It's a great school. Whitehall also has a new principal. Good Luck!

Yes, the bulk of my experience was with the previous principal. The last year my child was there, the new primcipal was there. She's great, and I really liked her. Also, I have heard about the new PTA, so I am glad things are moving in a good direction. Nothing like having your children in a calm, nurturing environment. : )

There are actually some places for before and after care to Whitehall and Tulip Grove.

Your child can attend an out of bounds elementary school if their daycare provides before and after care for certain schools???

NP...also curious about this. Anyone have more insight?

Unless the policy has changed, if a school is under capacity, you can apply for the babysitting transfer if the aftercare is in the school's boundary. This transfer requires reapplication annually. Also, in previous years, the school system allowed parents to apply for transfers to another school if that school is under capacity. That approval lasted for the entire time at the school unless the principal decided to kick a kid out (e.g. behavior problems). I don't know if this transfer program will return this year.

I am the yorktown parent quoted above. Our babysitting transfer letter states that it lasts until end of elementary. This doesn't work with whitehall or tulip grove because they are not under capacity. I'm not sure about the other (non babysitting transfer) option or whether you reapply every year for that.

Yorktown parent again. If the before/after care you choose happens to be located in-boundary at a school that is under capacity, then you can transfer with the principals permission.

Thank you all for the feedback! I'll look in to this!
