Mandatory Kindergarten Increases Redshirting?

My child was reading chapter books by the time she was allowed into K in California. If I could have got her in a year early I would have.

But aside from wasting a year "having fun" in K she was then able to skip 1st grade completely (after rigorous academic testing) and go into 2nd.

There were some kids in her K class who could have done with more time before going to school and they were mostly the younger boys. They were bright and adorable, but just not ready.
