Great, thanks for the useful information. If you decline the spot you got in the lottery, you are still waitlisted for all the high-preference schools, correct?

Also, this is probably useful to know.

Say that you lottery into your #5 school. You accept or decline, doesn't matter, and you are still waitlisted at #s1-4.

If you, say, get in off the waitlist for #1, then you remain on the waitlists for #s 2-4. It doesn't matter that you ranked them as less desirable. The ranking only matters in the initial lottery, not after that.

Yes. It is also worth noting that if this happens to you, the responsible thing to do would be to remove yourself from waitlists 2-4 so that the list is accurate. This is one reason why you should rank your schools based on your true preference.

I don't think under the new system you can remove yourself from the waitlist. You can decline a spot online though, if you are offered.
And sometimes people's preferences change. We got into our #7 choice off the waitlist but decided to go to our #10 school instead. It happens.
