Taylor and Tuckahoe don't allow for class switching either (at least as a general practice). There are pull-out sessions once a week, but the focus is on the GT resource teacher working with the main classroom teacher to push into the classroom. Whether ability grouping works well in the classroom depends entirely on the teacher. Our child had an experienced teacher last year, who was willing and able to offer differentiation; this year, not so much. The GT teacher A WISC full-scale index score of 150 is extremely high -- that puts your child at exceptionally gifted. But then again, I think that boils down to the teachers at your school and their willingness/ability to teach to your child's level. If your child was at our school, I'd encourage looking into other options if you can -- our own experiences with the GT program drove us to consider private schools for the smaller learning environment and (hopefully) more responsive teachers/administration. |
| My child was doing more challenging and interesting math in 1st grade as a pull-out than the alleged push-in that is supposed to be happening in 2nd grade. I plan on talking to the teacher about it if conferences don't get cancelled this week. I used to hear about the GT teacher a lot last year, but I haven't heard anything this year. |
