PP with pain here, and I agree that the skill of the technician must play a role. I had my first done in a non-metro area at a lab that didn't specialize in it. I had my second done at WRA and while not an OB or RE, it was a breeze.

I really believe these sorts of proceedures are all about the technician. Make sure you have a plan for the rest of the day in case you don't get the news you were hoping/ expecting. During my proceedure I could see the ink spread through my entire abdomen. Left tube had blow out. Really bummed me out. Was very distracted the rest of the day.
