Removing cooking odors from rental prior to selling it

Anonymous
I'm the PP. I don't know if any of you who've posted on this thread have ever been in a home where curry is cooked on a regular basis, but it is strong. We've looked at houses where the owners cook curry regularly and turned around and walked right out. It's like a smoker's house. That's not going to be a cheap or easy fix.

is there a way to put a no curry policy on a lease

We sold a home with extensive smoke damage (30+ years of smoking) There is a product that absorbs odors that you can buy on the internet. It is a gel that absorbs odors. After a few days/weeks it really smells! Then you take it and the odors out to the trash.

I remember the house we saw that smelled like curry and cat pee. We didn't get past the foyer. That Indian spice smell makes me want to gag.

Do ozone generators really work? Anyone use one successfully (or not?)

you may want to add a curry rider that states a mandatory serv-pro or disaster smoke remidation must be done before move out or before showing the home for sale.

The residents of these homes reek, as well.

I don't think you can do this at the end of a multi-year lease. Can you?

Check the ducts and run all of the air filters for a while. Check the oven itself. It may need to be cleaned. You can boil water in it for a while or perhaps spray with vinegar. Curry hangs in the air but if you get to the root of where it is, that my help. Don't forget to change any disposable filters, wash the floors, wash screens. Open every window in the house for entire day. Run a fan in the attic and crawl space.

No, they are just filled with a refreshing smell. But they don't remove the smell. just paste over it.

Ugh curry smells are the worst. I also remember house hunting and walking out if a home that had a strong kimchi smell. People who like stinky foods should keep this in mind if they're planning on selling their home. I doubt there's a way to restrict tenants from cooking odorous foods though :/

I agree that paint and duct cleaning should help. I also have used those bags of volcano rock that you can get at Home Depot. They really do help get rid of bad smells.

Also change the filter in the stove's hood.

It would turn me off because obviously the place doesn't have an adequate hood. Good hoods don't allow cooking smells to permeate everything

Well there is no way to force the tenant to use it
