Because roughly half the kids come in not knowing Spanish, teachers have to be creative to impart both the language and concepts being taught. We found that there were a good amount of projects, the teacher used hands-on activities, especially in science etc. The format really did change in middle school to lecture - which happens to classes in English as well. DC had a neuropsych evaluation in 6th grade (the neuropsych happened to be a bilingual Latina, although the testing was only in English). She explained that there can be an extra burden on working memory and processing having to learn content in a second language and the lecture format common in middle school immersion is not ideal for kids with LD's. She specifically said that it's not a question of language ability, or the ability to continue learning Spanish (or start a third language) as a foreign language (Gunston and other Arlington middle schools also offer classes in Spanish for fluent speakers, which kids who leave immersion can take). Good luck!
