2 Rivers - kids tours

NP, and another TR parent. Please post here if you have unanswered questions and maybe I or others can answer them for you.

I also attended the Two Rivers Open House yesterday. I was initially on a student-led tour but lucked up when an administrator formed a group to take a tour of her own. I agree that the kids are cute and it's nice that they like their school and want to share their experiences, but it is important for an adult to co-lead the tour with the students to answer questions that kids just don't know how to answer. Other than that, I felt the tour was informative. It was nice to be able to see the kids in action, go into classrooms, see the art, PE and music teachers at work, and to see students engaged in different types of learning. I left with a good impression from this tour. Favoring Two Rivers over CHML - didn't get a good vibe from their open house a few weeks ago!

We were also on this same tour (probably with the same kids who talked a bunch about their field trip). I really liked the model of student led tours but I wish an administrator could have been around more to move the kids along. They spent a lot of time talking about the older kids when we were interested in the PK classes. We didn't really get to see the PK classes and left impressed with the older grades but underwhelmed with PK. Bummed about this.

Agreed. My child will be entering PK3 next year and I felt that we didn't spend a lot of time in the PK3 and 4 classes. Most of the tour was based on the upper grades. While it was nice to see the older kids in action, I feel that most parents at the open house have children in PK3-K. We really wanted to see what the little ones were doing in their classroom!

Keep in mind that a school has every interest in parents committing over the long haul and so do the kids and your fellow parents. So whether you're enamored with the preschool classrooms and teachers really shouldn't be the decisive factor about how you assess your options. And trust me, they're right, you'll be stunned how fast those years fly by and how much more time you and your child will be spending in elementary and middle school classrooms. Really a very decisive portion of your life. So you should give that lots of weight. Of course, switching schools will be an option, always is, but one that comes with a price tag for your and your child.
