Toddler travel

yes and yes. Not my favorite thing to do, and if there's a transit option, I much prefer that.

When we travel to cities, which is most of our traveling, we don't bring a carseat. She just goes in the taxi. Keep in mind that taxis are popular in cities, and in most cities there is a lot of traffic, so they're not driving very fast.

Um, yeah.

Except for the trip from the airport to downtown

Or the random nut job trip on the expressway

Or the crazy driver weaving in and out and speeding

A 30mph crash isn't insignificant.

Has anyone done this for the trip from the airport to downtown? Is it legal?

We flew with our 2 year old recently. We took the train from the airport to the city. For our return flight, we rented a car with a car seat. We don't use car seats in taxi's when traveling but it does make me nervous to do the airport drive without a car seat. But yes, if you are in a taxi, it is legal to skip the car seat.

We borrowed a CARES harness a few times between age 2 and 3. DS didn't like it and seriously protested using it. He does fine in the seat (3.25) so we've stopped bothering.

I am going to use these ideas!

I have 2 followup questions for the travel vets out there: Are cares harnesses really necessary? We won't have carseats with us. They sound like more trouble than they are worth. Many of the reviews say that they don't always fit around the seat, the person behind can't use their tray table, the kid can still slide down, etc. Thoughts for a short flight?

Also, we are going to the city and won't rent a car. We may take a few taxi rides. What do people in NYC for example, do when they take a short taxi ride with kids? I can't imagine they have car seats if they are going to a restaurant or to a zoo or something in a different part of town.

TIA for helping.

We use Uber Family -- just install the app and request a family car w/ car seat. It's extra $ but worth it to me.

For the CARES harness, I'd say it really depends on your kid. Worst flight I ever had was with my 2 year old and 3 month old. I figured we'd only use the 3 mo old's seat and 2 yr old could sit with the seatbelt. He simply wouldn't sit. After constantly battling with him over it, he ended up strapped in the baby's seat and I held her the whole flight (5 hours). After that we got the CARES and flying was much better.
