The sounds vaguely reminiscent of some one I know, though I can't place the name.

In all seriousness though, I find it horrific that the world still faces thaws sorts of horrific human rights abuses in 2015 and that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are under attack.

Stay safe Jeff!

This is why I wouldn't move to Saudi Arabia even though I love Mecca & Medina, I would probably have been flogged by now . Fun fact: There is a book out there titled "In Defense of Flogging" written by a former Baltimore City police officer and professor of law. Imagine if a Muslim had written it?!

What's it like being Muslim? Well, it's hard to find a decent halal pizza place and occasionally there is a hashtag calling for your genocide...

The problem is not Radical Islam, but Radical Igorance~

"Amongst the friends of Allah, the Qur'an is considered as a love letter from Allah, which inevitably is read continuously to remind them of their Beloved. "Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

well, maybe branch out and read a few different philosophy books.

Jeff, you verbally flog people, so they respond in kind. It's not really surprising.

1) You are flogged with all your clothes on. You could put any number of layers of foam under your shirt.

2) The flogger must hold a Quran under the arm he is flogging with. This means the flogging is done using the arm from just the elbow down. it is almost impossible to get leverage to deliver a whipping of any strength.

Flogging in Saudi Arabia really amounts to an exercise in public humiliation.

An American embassy counsel in Saudi Arabia I once knew told me that frequently those who are convicted of crimes in Saudi Arabia are given a choice between prison time or flogging, and he always recommended flogging to his American charges. Saudi prisons are pretty bad.

I'm really relieved to read this description. Thank you for posting. Had read that he'll be whipped something like 50 times each week for 50 weeks, and was worried he'd been essentially sentenced to be tortured to death. Still horrible what they're doing to him. He's going to be in prison for quite a while.

The blogger has suffered his first 50 lashes:

Apparently the US Department of State made a statement asking for the punishment to be reviewed. I would think that given how frequently our commitment to freedom of expression has been reiterated lately, something a bit stronger than that could have been done.

Well that's true. The flogger in chief can give as good as he gets if he disagrees with you.

How can anyone consider the kingdom of Saudi Arabia to be a civilized, modern nation?

Who does?

They don't do them all at once, they do them in increments on different occassions.
