Someone fucked up, but it wasn't OP. Her DS is an adult. He lives out of the house. He messed up.

It genuinely could be the latter two issues. Did he/she go far away for college?

In my case, I would've done so much better if I lived at home and commuted to a small and UG focused institution.

I doubt its depression or medical issues. It called FRESHMAN with first taste of true freedom! hello people!

I got a 0.2 followed up by a 1.0 and managed to get an RA to a really good graduate school a few years later, so there is hope.

My cousin earned a 0.25 her first semester at college. Years later, the family would kid her that the only thing she got right that semester was her name.

That said, she did better as time went on. She might not have been an academic superstar, but she graduated in good academic standing and in the 15 years since has built a solid career. She's also a good, kind, and patient person, which is sometimes a better measure of a person than a GPA.

My best friend in college got kicked out for poor grades after the first semester. He worked for a year and came back on academic probation. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and ended up being one of the few students in his graduating class with multiple job offers. His grades were still not impressive, but he completed his coursework. During his year off, he worked his ass off and was great at networking the connections he made during that year of work.

When my brother called in May after his second semester in college, I picked up the phone, and he asked if his report card had arrived. I said it had, and he asked me to open it. I did, and he asked if it was 0.0. I said "yes" and he said "I won't be coming home for the summer." He osviously hadn't been going to class, and my parents stopped paying. He stayed in his college town, and eventually got a job working in a factory. My parents would not support him.
He worked in the factory for about a year before he decided that he didn't want that to be his life for the next 50 years.
He begged his way back into college, and he ended up doing really well. He graduated and went on to work on his master's. He needed that time to grow up.

Soooooo many distractions for kids these days with the internet and games being readily available. I'm surprised there aren't many, many more kids failing b/c they don't yet have the personal discipline to limit computer entertainment time.

OP, I went to college and my first semester took 5 classes. The only one I passed was aerobics. I was a kid in high school that didn't have a lot of freedom and I went to school and just partied my butt off. It was awesome. But my GPA-oh my god, I think your kid beat me

My parents had a fit and gave me an ultimatum: one semester to clean up my act or I was leaving school, living at home and working full time. I loved school so much and the thought terrified me. I pulled it together and graduated just fine (albeit one semester late).

Telling you my story because it can happen-some kids can just totally blow it early in college. I wouldn't allow it to continue for sure, but I may allow a one-semester forgiveness just based on my own personal experience.....
