Engineering?

I thought MIT just lost their last football game? Anyway, my husband played for him and, yes, he is a white nerd...

Didn't they say mit team has 9 guys who got 2400?

UMD, UMichigan, etc - Go with a state flagship
Or the state engineering school - Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, etc.
Unless he goes to a private w/tippy top engineering focus - MIT, Harvey Mudd, etc.

Yes, they were eliminated from the playoffs after a fabulous season. If you define "nerd" as an exceptional STEM student who loves to learn, then, yes there are a lot of nerds playing football at MIT. ('Tho I assume by "him" you're referring to the coach.) In any case, I'm still not sure how OP's son will benefit from having played football in HS if he's not going to play in college?

I would be careful about giving fodder to folks to bash your son. You threw one steak to five lions with the 'white minority' remark.

University of Cincinnati. Not as popular here on the East Coast, but a great engineering school.

Engineering is one of those degrees where the degree matters more than the school in most cases (excepting MIT, Harvey Mudd and maybe a few others). DH is an engineer who works in finance and if a resume comes across his desk with an engineering degree he will give it a second look. It is also a degree that has a lot of drop outs so it might be worth sending your son somewhere where he will be towards the top of the class -- and the top of the bell curve -- and less likely to drop out.

It is hard to argue against UofMD in our region.

Those are good! Also:

Purdue Univeristy
University of Illinois
University of Texas - Austin
University of Washington
Northwestern University
University of British Columbia
McGill University
Missouri University of Science and Technology

I think a few of these will be a stretch with that GPA.

DS is a junior 3.76, 2130 sat, 32 act. Very strong in AP physics and calc. He likes UMD because of proximity to NASA.

I'm sure he would be annoyed if he found out I was Asking, but any reccomendations?

OP - I am somewhat puzzled by this. What does proximity to NASA got to do with liking UMD? Is he thinking that will give him some advantage re. internship? Also, if he likes UMD, why are you asking the question? Are you concerned UMD may not provide good ed for your DC?

NASA in DC offers internships w UMD. He is very interested in that. We love UMD but don't want DC to be solely focused on one school.
And yes, our family is very diverse. That being said, my son has definitely felt discriminated against in some of his AP classes. That is what he bases his thoughts on. His classmates actually call him a stupid white football player. That offends our family.
He buys into what these super intelligent kids tell him constantly.. Yes it is ignorant, he's been listening to it for years.

Maryland is a great school, and there are tons of opportunities for internships and coops in the DC area. What is he interested in studying? Aerospace? Mechanical? Electrical? Any of these could lead to a career w/ NASA or other aerospace companies.

Really confused about the white football player thing. Given the demographics of the country aren't the majority of high school football players white? Think Indiana, Ohio, etc. At our MCPS high school the majority of the football players are white, and are in the same AP classes as the soccer players, band members, etc. You need to expand his world view a bit because if he says something like this in an interview he may offend, or puzzle, the interviewer.

NASA offers internships exclusively only to UMD students? OP - are you sure about this?
Anonymous
I don't think its exclusive. I just know they offer it.
