Are you using an EPA lead safe certified contractor on the school renovations? The peeling paint on the school's exterior looks like a superfund site. |
DGS manages the construction process, DCPS staff receive the building once it is complete. So DCPS won't have in-depth details like this. I am sure they are doing proper remediation of environmental issue on the site, considering how substantial the renovations are. |
Thank you all so much for your thoughtful questions! We have read through them all and are working to reply to each one. For now, we're heading off to tonight's community meeting.
We welcome additional questions, and will be back tomorrow with more responses. Thank you! |
Can you make the school diverse? Ho w come DCPS didn't phase out the school like Eastern and have only an incoming class, let the school population increase gradually? |
This is such bullsh*t if DCPS didn't give Capitol Hill substantial bites at the apple...who thinks Roosevelt will get to digest. Mayor Muriel is not all of sudden the Black Madonna |
I don't follow your analogy... try saying it with less bitter next time. |
I would like to applaud the effort to engage here in this forum. An anonymous message board can be both a terrible and valuable place to gain insight. I don't feed into Roosevelt, but I have been following the developments to see "what's next?" As the saying goes: Hope springs eternal. I am always hopeful that real, meaningful progress towards an integrated city is just around the corner.
In a way that can only be done on an anonymous message board I will throw this out: Does Roosevelt envision itself as a racially diverse school in the future? If so, how does it seek to achieve this? |
What are you going to do to keep highly-effective staff at this school and others. There is high burn-out level at high schools and this constant churning of staff makes it very difficult to get any plans off the ground or to maintain them. What are the plans for the high level of ELL limited proficient and special ed. students that currently attend this school, are there going to be any special programs to support these learners at the new Roosevelt? |
Who's bitter, it just says. Roosevelt neighborhood shouldn't get their hopes up high because DCPS surely gave the Capitol Hill area their azzes to kiss. Smooches. |
OK, sure - low expectations, but I'll still demand what I think is right. |
Thank you for translating...I didn't get it either. |
On the one hand I commend the DCPS people for reaching out on this forum. On the other hand, it is annoying because clearly they do not have the ability to respond rapidly as is required on this type of forum. They signed off on yesterday at 4:47 p.m. It is 10:56 and still no new answers. Pretty annoying. |
They did provide some fast answers yesterday, but they were fairly meaningless. I'd rather wait a few days for a good response (yes, I know = that's a setup). We're not really pulling any punches with some of these questions. Patience... |
This last question is that one that needs to be answered. Translation, how are you attracting high income families that also includes white families and assorted gentrifiers in the neighbrhood. DCPS can renovate and build whatever they want, but that has no real impact on acacdemics. Woodson and Dunbar are good examples of lousy schools all dressed up. Ward 4 has a huge and growing population of high income and hyper motivated parents who can and will move their kids or just move to get their kids the best school environment. Is that fair or right? doesn't matter but its a fact. Until DCPS acknowledges the massive achievement gap that is evident by middle school, high SES parents will be putting their kids into Latin, Deal or Basis or moving. This is such a no brainer that I never understand why DCPS acts likes its a mystery. My kid is two and there is NO WAY Roosevelt is going to be an option even in 12 years if DCPS continues with the same mind set year after year. I don't think my kid is gifted but she sure as heck will come to school 1) prepared 2) fed 3) and have two parents who make her education the most importatnt thing in our house 4) two parents who commit hours and money to the school. Stop treating families like us as if we don't matter or can just fend for ourselves and then act SURPRISED that you are hemorraging students after 4th grade. |
^^ Yup. It is the same thing with Brookland Middle. |
