Caring for an Old Cat

You said the vet said she's ok physically-- was it recently that the vet checked her out? Crying before peeing or pooping and then going outside the litter box could mean she is in pain.

Hi,
I agree that you should think about really whether she's happy. I put my 19 year old cat down when she seemed to not have any good days anymore. She was also crying sometimes, staring into space, litter box issues. I think at that point she was probably pretty demented--had had one seizure that I'd seen. Good luck. It's a hard time.

Cleaned my last litter box, picked up my last cat vomit, last pile in the corner, last item destroyed by cats and I will NEVER have another cat again. Buh bye !!

Get the cat checked out if you haven't?

We have a nearly 17 y.o. cat. She has kidney failure. She used to sleep with us every night. Now, she basically lives in the kitchen/pantry/dining room area. We moved her litter box up to the pantry (not ideal but it stopped the potty accidents). She sleeps on a blanket on the table (on a corner). We keep a light on for her at night. All of that has helped. But, she's old. She requires more reassurance and maintenance. She's a beloved member of our family so, while inconvenient at times, we do it. We owe it to her. She's otherwise fine. She's just old and with some dementia.

I urge you to reexamine how you can change things to suit her in her remaining months. Move the litter box somewhere more convenient for her? Keep lights on at night? Keep her somewhat confined (baby gates)?

I personally think it's somewhat cruel just to discard an otherwise happy animal b/c their health problems are inconvenient.

Can you put a kitty diaper on her? Or maybe get litter boxes with lower sides in case she has trouble getting inside the litter box and then place litter boxes all over the house.

Are there large amounts of poop outside the litter box? Is it possible she is pooping inside the litter box, forgets that she isn't done because she has kitty dementia, and ends up dropping poop on the floor?
