There are tons of ways the Bible can be uplifting. Besides, what other book out there includes stories of deceit, adultry, murder, wars, anger, revenge, disbelief, earthly disasters, God's saving grace, Redemption, hope, and the list goes on. Both the OT and NT are filled with all kinds sentiment (positive and negative). Simply reading one a chapter of Psalm or something from Solomon is inspiring even if you aren't looking for one particular thing. What are you looking for? Is there something in particular OP - worry, feeling unloved, overwhelmed, depressed, infidelity, hopless, stress, or some other aspect that is most troublesome? |

Sigh. It is indeed a great book, but for someone without your Christian frame of reference, it isn't going to have the effect you suggest. You probably know this, so I have to interpret your post as mild proselytizing. That's a very inconsiderate thing to do. |
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. |
you might enjoy eckhart tolle "a new earth." it's essentially a layman's version of buddhist philosophy. |
If you're nerdy with a good sense of humor and think footnotes in fiction is a fun idea, try something by Alain de Bottom. He writes fiction and non-. Highly recommend How Proust Can Change Your Life-- it's quick and funny. |
Anything by David Sedaris. He is laugh out loud funny.
I'm also just now reading "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" and I am loving it. |

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.
The setting is South Africa, pre-apartheid during WW2. The book is the story of the power of one person to touch so many lives and is true to its namesake. This book is so uplifting and is a BEAUTIFUL work of literature. Not only are the words as delicious as warm cheese over crusty french bread, but it is a really accessible book and you will find that you cannot put it down. As a mom, you will relate to the main character who is a young boy, you will just want to hold him in your arms and love him. Another plus of this book is that it is historically accurate, so you will learn something without even trying. You will get a glimpse if South Africa right on the cusp of apartheid. I walked away from this book wanting to learn everything Africa, the land of contradictions, song, beauty, sorrow, love, and struggle. Warning: Do not accidentally buy the abridged Children's version. Any bad reviews on Amazon are customers who accidentally bought the Children's version and are not understanding that they are reviewing the wrong version. http://www.amazon.com/Power-One-Novel-Bryce-Courtenay/dp/034541005X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234911405&sr=8-1 |
Okay, The Power of One is one of my favorite books, but if OP is down, the first half of that book is NOT going to lift her up. It's very upsetting and hard to read at the beginning. Yes, it becomes uplifting ultimately, but I would not recommend to someone who is down and needs a pick-me-up. |
I totally agree. I was reading that book at work on my lunch hour and one part when the main character was a kid made me cry. At work! |
