DC1 napped pretty much every day until he was about 4.5 & an average of maybe 2-3 times a week until around his 5th birthday. He's now 7 & will still occasionally fall asleep for a bit in the afternoon on the weekends or during school breaks, especially if he was up later than normal the night before &/or has been really physically active ( a lot of time spent swimming,in particular, seems to lend itself to him catching a few zzzs midday).
DD2 napped almost every day until around the time she turned 4 at the end of the summer. She now only naps maybe once or twice a week but still has quiet time every afternoon, as did her brother until right before he started kindergarten when he was almost 5 & a half.Even after he stopped needing an actual nap every day during his last year of preschool,I found that DS was generally happier, more cooperative & far less prone to whining & melting down if he was still required to rest for a while midday & this appears to be true of DD now, as well.
While the age at which a child no longer needs to nap obviously varies,as someone who works with a lot of young kids, I honestly feel like too many parents these days permit their children to stop napping before they are truly ready to, resulting in them being chronically overtired, which, in turn, negatively impacts their behavior.
If your DC is, in fact, really ready to give up his nap, OP, I would definitely continue to enforce some quiet time every afternoon if I were you.Even if he doesn't actually sleep, he could almost certainly still benefit from having a bit of down time midday.
