I think she just wants to be in touch in general, so if discussing your whereabouts isn't of interest to you, that's understandable, but start up a different discussion - the news, the kids, what drapes you're considering buying. She probably just wants to feel like she's part of your life. I initially was taken aback when my MIL offered up a lot of suggestions about different aspects of my life, but then I realized she doesn't really care that much whether I accept her suggestions, she just wants to be part of the conversation and once I realized that, it was NBD to me to call her up and shoot the breeze.
