For less rigorous than the ones mentioned and/or less of a Scene but still thoughtful, you might try Friends, Columbia Prep and Calhoun in Manhattan. For K-8, also in Manhattan, you might look into Bank Street, which is associated with the Education College of the same name. In Brooklyn, Brooklyn Friends and Poly Prep are also great (though Poly Prep is pretty far away from even downtown Brooklyn.) Good luck!
