Talbots for dress pants, reasonably priced suit separates and sweaters would be fine. I think their more casual clothes are terrible (evidenced by the horrid floral blouse link posted by a PP) but their dress pants and sweaters are decently made, fit well and wear well.
PP here. I do not dress like I'm in college. I do wear jcrew, yes. But I also wear high end brands from Bloomingdales/saks and haven't worn a pair of dress shoes to work less than $500 in maybe 7 years. Jcrew is absolutely appropriate for some staples such as work pants, sweaters etc. my only caution would be the lower quality these days.
