Didn't mean to knock Dolly (agree her musical chops are unquestionable). The issue is more that my parents did NOT think it was cool to like Dolly Parton back in 1979 and were trying to steer me closer to their taste. I was also infatuaged with Lawrence Welk (and seriously, now that I'm older I once again think - kudos to me as a little kid and all, because corny or not, 12th street rag and other big band stuff is pretty cool!) But imagine being the rocker parents of that 8 year old who was "into" country and lawrence welk!!!
I can see why Dolly was a strange example, though. I guess a closer Jonas Bros parallel would be found with my youngest sister, who went through an insane New Kids on the Block phase. (I was fortunately way too old for this craze). On a heartening note, our close friends friends tell us that thanks to Rock Band, their pre-adolescent kids are asking for the Clash and the New Pornographers for Christmas. (I was wondering if they had to then explain what a new pornographer was, and how it differs from an "old" pornographer...!) |
My favorite CD's with the kids- "Greasy Kids Stuff" Vol 1 and 2 from the WFMU archives, "For the Kids" 1,2,and 3 (just make sure you skip past any earnest singer mangling 'Rainbow Connection') Recently my 10 yr old DD started listening to Lisa Loeb (!) and her cd Camp Lisa. I couldn't stand her when I was 21- either she got more interesting or I've mellowed entirely too much.
I figure that this fun time music in the car (for ages 3 to 10) thing will eventually ebb into everyone to their own taste clamorings, but I hope that I'm laying some solid ground work for the alternative (or whatever these crazy kids are calling it these days) |
I love WFMU! I forgot all about Greasy Kids Stuff. Thanks for the reminder! |
I listen to WFMU everyday... Great great great station. Thank god for streaming radio ![]() |
