Yikes. We're well behind our peers. 31 and 32, HHI $150k, 1 infant.
Retirement: 45k Emergency savings: 40k Home equity: 100k or so Other Investments: 25k 529: a measly ninety bucks (just started) I have about $10k in student loans left to pay off, then I'd like to start socking away more for retirement. |
$90? That kind of cracks me up. Why not do $100? |
I'm not PP, but the same age. $42 a check was a stretch for me until this year. It got me to $1k annually. |

38, $120,000, saved $300k in 6 years. Good thing too because unforeseen circumstances ended in a 18 months of unemployment. Still have over $200k left. It's been great to have this backup savings and not have to change our lifestyles too much. We have not feared losing our house and becoming homeless.
We're very realistic when it comes to needs and wants. Our social events usually involve gatherings with friends that are *gasp* potluck. Our potlucks aren't like other people's as no one in our group makes anything with creamed soups or mayonaise. We love flavors and spice and willingly try new things. Should one of us not have a lot of time to make something we'll pick up a rotisserie chicken or vegetable platters. Kids are always welcome and we never have to pay for sitters. For date nights our friends will take our kids and we'll take theirs so we have paid a sitter just a handful of times in the past 11 years. I don't need a Coach bag and always get compliments on the purses I find at Kmart or Target. Even my friends with a love for high end bags comment on one specific bag and ask what designer it is from. They are always shocked to hear I purchased it at Kmart on clearance. |
We've had our share of good fortune and mistakes. We both worked our way through college and didn't have student loans. My parents really emphasized saving early for retirement and so I prioritized that. Our first house was our biggest mistake. Bought a starter house in a so-so neighborhood that turned to crap. We were basically trapped in the house for 8 years and sold at a $50,000 loss....which was painful. |

I might later |
21:56 here. Bought my house in DC in 2004 and it has nearly doubled in value. I'm the first to admit that my good fortune was pure luck. No skill involved. |
