Help appreciated. Thumb will not stop itching!

Anonymous
Thanks again PPs. I don't see any bumps. I think it may be nerve compression. I didn't notice it at ALL yesterday (and I was really active) - grocery shopping, picking a big bag of dog food up and putting it in the cart/car, etc. I think I must sleep with my wrists in an odd position b/c this morning it is driving me BATTY. It could be a sign of something more ominous but right now I'm going with "nerve compression".

And not pregnant.

Have you started any new meds lately? I had that weird itchy under the skin feeling after starting vitamin d supplements. It went away after it got out of my system.

Could you have carpal tunnel?

I had that with my foot. Diagnosed with diabetes.

With my firstborn (who is now 12) I had to have a C-section and the doc giving me a spinal hit my nerve, causing my foot to jerk into the air (and an immense amount of pain, btw). Ok the nerve was damaged after that and my foot was in pain. But it was a phantom pain--the injury was to the nerve in my back. It took a while to go away, but I still get a small phantom pain when I shave my leg…and--I get a phantom itch on the underside/palm or by the big toe of my foot at times.

So when I read this I thought, nerve injury--but not necessarily the part where it hurts, could be farther up or on the trunk/spine.

OP here. I think it's a nerve injury or a nerve irritation. I have issues with my neck/back and it may very well be something that is being pinched in my neck/back and traveling to my thumb!

My itching thumb is on top of the thumb. It's been going on about a week now. Nothing quenches the itching. It was itching so badly last night I was scratching it on my robes zipper. There are no bites, injuries of any kind. I see my derm next month. I'll be sure to mention it to him. I, too, am not diabetic.

I have that once in awhile and the only thing that stops it for hours is running it under the hottest water you can stand. I put it under there about 3 times for a second or two. I think it stops the nerves from making it itch.

I have same problem. It was started 5 month ago during sleep.I thought it is bcaz of mosquito bite .It happened to me sometimes. But now it is itcing my thumb and some area of my palm under my thumb.little hard muscle feeling inside skin. Doctor told me it is nothing serious and advise hot water treatment and cocobut oil oinment.
Doctor told it may be bcaz of breakdown of cholesterol.

I get this probably once a year. Drives me crazy! I feel like I'm going to itch myself raw. Lotion doesn't really help, but water seems to, so I just sit my hand in a bowl of warm/hot water and it subsides.

I do have a little pinched nerve in my back from a soccer incident growing up, so I think this is just a flareup of that. I've had a lot of bloodwork done recently and dr appointments (other issues) and everything there looks good, so I'm not concerned.

I have this in matching spots on my ankles, and it is due to poor circulation for me.

My derm friend told me what it was called and gave me samples for it. It seems to have stopped happening. VERY VERY ITCHY. Like nutty itchy, And in a very small area. Side of thumb mostly.

It sounds like a nerve thing...could be in the thumb, via compression (you said it didn't bother you at all and listed all the things you did...might have irritated the area around it and it's inflamed). Do an experiement with ibuprofen and see if it goes away. if it's inflammation, then this product Relief Factor works great (it's just foods that reduce inflamation naturally, because it's bad to do ibruprofen or NSAIDS for long)

It could also be a nerve thing related to the spine. I had a spinal with my first C-section and they hit a nerve in my back. After that, I had phantom pain in my leg and big toe, which then turned to phantom itch. I had to remind myself that my itch was not a problem with my toe, it was with my back.

I had this last night on my thumb bed. It itched so bad, I could have scratched my thumb off. I thought for sure a spider bit me. I put a wet towel on it, and helped a lot. I also get this on my leg. Feels like a bump under my skin and if I scratch it , it starts to itch so bad. What the heck.....
