If you work part-time, what do you do?

I teach (adjunct professor). It's a dodgy profession to try to do full time, but it works for my family because my husband works full time.

I work for a non-profit, 30hrs a week, mostly telecommuting and earn about 50K.

In terms of flexiblity, interesting work, and compensation, I feel like my job gets two out of three. I feel lucky that I am able to keep up an interesting career but still be able to pick my kids up after school most days, cook a real dinner, etc. For now at least, it's worth the low salary, but we worry about money a lot. I've thought about looking for a new job several times in the past few years, but stick with my current organization mostly because of the flexibility.

I am interested in finding out too what other moms are doing. I would love to take time off now when my toddler needs it but friends say the best time to take off or work less is later when my son is a little older.

What age do your friends say is best for taking time off or working less? I'm in the boat along with you and OP but my boy is a little older. I'm financially unable to quit, but have been getting my ducks in a row to make some kind of move - fewer hours and less responsibility would be heaven, even if it's for a short time. Would love a chance to recharge and savor every minute with my little boy who's not so little anymore!

Economist w/ Federal Government; 20/week; about $50,000.

I can't beat the flexibility. I've thought about adding more hours as the kids get older but I can see the benefit of keeping a reduced schedule especially in the middle school years.

Good luck to those trying to reduce your work schedules. I was in my position for many years before requesting the switch to part-time.

attorney in state job
Earn 78k for 7-3:30 schedule, absolutely no nights or weekends (no blackberry! Yay!)

I have the option to go 80% but want to promote first (salary increase to 90k), so that when I go 80%, Im earning same salary as now

Great, fulfilling work -- right hand woman to a key decision-maker for the state, so my work impacts everyone in a meaningful way. See my work actually play out state-wide and help folks each day!

Feel so lucky to have a gig that allows me to "contribute" to society at large and still be at the pick-up line by 4pm each day.

Also -- stayed home for 6 years prior to taking this job.
