Indoor pool and a few activities with the kids, less than 2.5 hours

Another plug for Kingsmill, which we visited for a long weekend this summer and had a great time, though agree that the indoor pool is not a great one (outdoor is fun with a lazy river).

How does kings mill compare to the omni bedford or homestead? Are the accommodations nice?

Massanutten, Kingsmill, Great Wolf Lodge, find a place in Greene County Va., skip the pool and swim in the creek below the waterfall at Doyles Run. Lansdowne and Omni Homestead Resorts have nice outdoor pools, not sure about Lansdowne for indoor.
Dove Winds, Hampton Suites in Chincoteague have indoor pools, the one at The Refuge Inn is nice and warm, they have their own pony pen and its is close to the national seashore entrance.
We stayed at a simple motel in Nags Head called the Blue Heron, it is old school - reservations over the phone secured with a check by snail mail - but their indoor pool and hot tub are nice and warm and all the rooms are oceanfront.

We stayed in Massanutten last May. It is run down and outdated in the rooms. The water park is pretty big--not Great Wolfe Lodge big, but big enough to entertain the kids. It was unpleasantly crowded. If you decide to go there for the water park, stay elsewhere... but personally I'd skip it altogether.
