Does a 5 year old understand the different between a female friend and a girlfriend?

You weren't there. You don't know what was said. A child may not understand when she sees an big autograph with a "heart kiss" next to a girl's picture that the girl wasn't the love of her father's life, that it's just a social nicety. Kids dramatize. And if he pointed out a high school girlfriend, so what? Are you threatened by his teenage romances? Laugh it off, OP.

High school girlfriends are often the first love of your life. And it is definitely love . Why hide reality? Hiding reality leads to psychotherapy.
