Should you encourage your child in their reach schools or gently advise them against a reach?

I'd definitely have him apply to the reach schools that interest him and primarily to schools we can afford. If there were 1-2 schools DS was really wanting to go to but were out of reach for us financially, I'd probably let him apply but with a very frank discussion that even if accepted attendance would be conditional on financial aid (not loans).
