Eaton's a great option for a high performing school that has diversity both economic and racial. As for the feeder issue it's still up in the air but I think hardy is a pretty good school that has the potential to be a great school with more community investment.

This is a false statement. Demonstrably so. A standard measure of concentration is the HHI (Herfindahl-Hirschman Index). You can compute this for the "relevant" elementary schools in NW and you'll see that, surprisingly, Mann is least concentrated. I'm too busy at work to do the computations today, but it's pretty straightforward. It's just the sum of the squared "market shares." Mann is: Black: 11% Hispanic/Latino: 14% White: 61% Asian: 8% Pacific/Hawaiian: 0% Native/Alaskan: 0% Multiple races: 5% It's HHI is .11*.11 + .14*.14 + .61*.61 + .08*.08 +.05*.05=.4127 Murch, for example is: Black: 12% Hispanic/Latino: 8% White: 66% Asian: 9% Pacific/Hawaiian: 0% Native/Alaskan: 0% Multiple races: 5% It's HHI is .12*.12+.08*.08+.66*.66+.05*.05=.4589 According to the STANDARD measure of industry concentration (which is very appropriate here), Murch is less diverse than Mann. Numbers don't lie. Don't flame me because you don't like the answer, by the way. It surprised me too when I ran the numbers. It just goes to show that our gut (especially when almost nobody on this board has visited both Murch and Mann, let alone a half dozen elementary schools, so we're just basing our expectations off of nothing more than guesses) is often wrong. |
| House first. All the schools you are looking at are good and have been for years. Who know what will happen with boundaries, etc so go for the house. Welcome! |
Oh good. A poster with issues. Go be "busy" at work will you? Mann wasn't even on OP's list! Perhaps the school is great and the housing stock sucks. |
| I'm the PP. I agree that Mann was not relevant. (I posted immediately after the poster saying "Mann is the only answer.") I am just trying to dispel falsehoods whenever they arise in whatever form they occur. |

Given the priorities you laid out, Eaton is a wonderful option to consider. It is very diverse, had a great (but not overbearing) community environment, and has good "break out" options for kids functioning at (or below) where the rest of the class is working in reading and math.
The neighborhood around it is family friendly as well - walkable to the cute CP library, zoo, CP Club pool and such. We moved here with a 4 and 2 year old, and considered about the same list of options, and I'm really glad we decided on CP. That said, finding the right house can be tough so I'd tend to start looking at real estate options and keep your mind open about schools... |

super cute house for sale at 38th & Yuma!
http://www.sothebysrealty.com/eng/sales/detail/180-l-905-7qm5vy/north-cleveland-park-washington-dc-20016 currently in the murch zone but on a block proposed to shift to Hearst - as several PP have noted - both great options - and walkable to both even w/ little ones (we do it all the time )
love the porches on this one... good luck OP! |

Numbers for some NW ES according to the method mentioned before. Arranged from MOST diverse to LEAST diverse.
(In parentheses) is the in-boundary percentage for each school. This should help inform about the diversity of the neighborhood. MOST DIVERSE Eaton=.3052 (36%) Hyde=.3691 (38%) Hearst=.4091 (18%) Mann=.4127 (86%) Key=.4413 (84%) Stoddert=.4463 (81%) Murch=.4589 (66%) Janney=.5268 (92%) Lafayette=.5544 (85%) LEAST DIVERSE |

Mann does indeed look like a Mini-Murch by the numbers.
I don't follow where your HHI numbers are coming from though, not that is matters to me. Just curious. |
|
Yeah, I found that surprising. My guess, completely uninformed, is that these schools would be among the most diverse elementary schools in DCPS. It would be very entertaining to see the numbers across DC for the next time someone refers to Upper Caucasia. (Diversity for these people only means "not-white," which I find annoying.)
I pulled the racial compositions from the DCPS School Profiles (http://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/). |
| If you care about middle school, go with Murch so that you can feed to deal. Hyde and Stoddert do not and Eaton may not. |
I don't see how Oyster isn't list as one of the most diverse schools in Ward 3 (if not the most diverse). You need to check your numbers. |
|
That takes a lot of chutzpah (and ignorance) to make proclamations about school quality 10 years in the future. And, it also grossly misstates the quality of Hardy at present.
The OP has received lots of good advice in this thread. As stated (in black-and-white terms), this is not helpful. |
The numbers are correct. Oyster was not computed. Oyster is in the middle of the pack: Oyster=.4459. (Oyster is as hispanic-latino as some of the other schools are white.) |
