It's quality. My J Crew and Banana Republic pants from over 10 years ago still don't do this. Anything I have bought within the past few years has done this the within the first month of owning the pants and I'm lucky if they last a season because the material is thinner.

So where to buy decent pants?

This happens whenever you sit for any length of time wearing pants that have spandex or lycra in them. Sitting makes your butt spread, which makes the pants stretch. Then when you stand, they can't spring back into shape. This is less of an issue with lined pants, but of course that gets hot in the summer. I would love to see stretch get banned from all pants. Seriously, most of us need pants to hold us in, not stretch out and sag.

Ten years ago they weren't putting spandex and lycra in everything the way they do now. That stuff used to be reserved for exercise wear and plus size pants. Now it is everywhere.
