How much to tip camp counselors?

Anonymous
I wouldn't tip the CITs. Just tip the counselors. Depending on the number of counselors you have, I'd do $20 a head.

I don't think you need to tip the Division head -- that sounds like a more professional position that wouldn't require tipping.

I am a former camp director and have worked at both sleepaway and day camps. I have never heard of parents giving tips. I think that's nuts, personally.

I have never heard of doing this either. Are you trying to be special?

I've been a camper/counselor at 5 different camps in my life and tipping counselors has been customary at all of them. And thank goodness, as I relied on that $$ for buying whatever new dorm/house stuff I needed for the year. (My parents paid for the basics but these was always some extras that they didn't think were necessary.) It was really nice to have the $$, and nice to feel appreciated.

To answer OP's actual question, I think $20 is fine. Our kids' day camp says tipping is not expected but if you want to they suggest $5-20 per counselor.

Does $10-20 per counselor sound right?

Yes. When I worked at an overnight camp while in college we would get anything from a box of cookies, to socks, to cash (ranging from $10-$60) as tips. It was always nice to receive a tip, and somewhat expected because that was the culture of the camp, but some families didn't tip and that was fine too.

Why the difference?

Because of the 24/7, more or less, nature of the job.

Ugh, no.

Will this ever stop?

Not trying to be special, but thanks for thinking I am.

Everyone tips, its fairly customary in small Jewish camps. However, I did not tip at a gymnastics camp, a school based camp, or at Lego camp.

I worked at an overnight camp for 11 summers, and we got tipped. Of course, not every parent tipped, but many did, and we always remembered which ones did. Usually 50-100 bucks. It was pretty sweet, no doubt. It was and still is one of the top camps in the country.

Please tip all the counselors. $50 -$100 is a nice amount.

Thanks.

What state was this?

Oh gross. Were they your pet the following summer?

We tip $20 to counselors that spend a good amount of time with our kids. I don't think most people do, but it's appreciated. I have the kids write a short thank you note for them and tuck in a gift card.

Welcome to real world lady. If you frequent a restaurant, every waiter there knows what the regulars tip. The counselors are up in middle of night sometimes, dealing with home sickness, etc. Tip and tip well.

I was a lifelong camper at Jewish camps, and then a counselor, and I never received a tip from anyone. Not customary, at least in the midwest where I grew up.

I think it's a nice gesture, though, and the $10-20 amount sounds just fine.
