OP, my son did the exact same thing when he was about that age and it caught my attention, too.

He is now 17 and not on the spectrum in any way... it was just a fun new habit he picked up at the time and it eventually faded away.

Mine did it-- was just a phase!!

Mine flaps arms - I am assuming this is all phase stuff... but it's scary to read about these types of things being indicators of developmental delays/disorders.

I doubt it is anything more than your son figured out how to twirl his wrists and he likes the feeling - for now.

+1 My son spent a few months talking under his breath like that kid from "The Middle." Freaked me out but he eventually stopped doing it. An 8 month old is learning new things they can do everyday. If development is otherwise normal I'd say this is nothing to concern yourself with.

Anonymous wrote:Hi - I'm a second time mom to an 8 month old DS. He is super social and smiley, makes tons of sounds, plays peekaboo, sits great, army crawls, feeds himself, all that good stuff. However, over the past few weeks, he's been doing this crazy thing with his wrists where he twists/twirls them all around, almost like he's revving a motorcycle. He's just started (intermittently) clapping, so maybe he's just discovered this is another cool thing his hands can do? Either way it is kind of funky looking and his daycare provider also mentioned it to me yesterday (not in a concerned way, just more like, wow he's doing this funny thing a ton this week!)

Anyone BTDT? I have an older son too but he never did this. Googling isn't turning up much!

I remember the long thread on babies who do this. Yes, some of the kids were on the spectrum; other's not. So you'll probably freak yourself out a little reading it. My guess is you have nothing to worry about.

But they're really not in kids who are generally hitting their developmental benchmarks.

OMG! My kid does this too

Dh and I were just laughing about our 8 mi kid who started doing this again. I think he's trying to learn how to wave. We've been doing a lot of waving lately.

My kid did that a lot at that age. She's now 13 months and hasn't done it for at least a month or two. Now that's she's walking she has moved on to systematically destroying our house!

Even at 16 months, my dd does some weird repetitive hand motions sometimes when she is excited about something. I take note, but I can't get too worried when she is so socially interactive. I recommend continuing to look at the big picture.

Jazz hands!

Mine did the exact same motorcycle thing at that age. I thought it was weird too and everyone mentioned it, but he eventually stopped and now he's a perfectly normal 2.5 year old.

Oh, OP, kids do willy/weird things for a week or two at a time, please just ignore the "everything is a sign of autism" people here!

My daughter does the same (8months old) most like just a part of developing if no other signs involved.
