Painted stairs?

Exactly why many people put a runner on the stairs. Our house did not have one and I slipped on the steps while I was pregnant. I know someone else who did the same thing in a friends home. They had stairs without a runner. I have another friend who just installed carpet on the steps because her son fell down them, she fell down them, and she fell down them while holding her son. I have seen some painted stairs that I really like. Even ones with paint chipping off of them. However, after falling, I would never do it in my own home.

Our stairs have the risers painted, but not the part you step on. It looks nice, but they get scuffed constantly. And the stairs lead into the foyer (center hall colonial) so it's one of the first things someone sees when they enter the house. We generally take our shoes off when we come in, but it still happens.

No issues with chipping paint or anything, though.
