The 4 quarters are averaged to get the final grade. In classes where there is a final (algebra/geometry), the final is worth "half a quarter" (so 1/9 of the year)

The SOL does not play into grades, except in high school credit classes. We were told by the county to add 5% to the students' final exam grades for a pass, 10% for a pass advance.

Could you please tell me which county said to add 5% to the students' final exam grades for a pass, 10% for a pass advance ?

So if a student scored 80% on the Final exam her/his score will be 85% if the student is pass and 90% if the student is pass advanced ? Is this something new or has always been that way ? Which office in FCPS provides this instruction ?

The final exam is usually ~10% or 1/9th of the final grade,(depending on the class) so we are talking about a half point or point to the final grade for the class. I don't know which "Office" provided this instruction(?). I know that my rising senior has had it added to his grade for the past four years. So, at least four years. It is akin to giving extra credit. The only students it affects are those that are on the borderline between grades.

My DD , a rising 9th grade in FCPS did not get any additional pts to her final exam but she had a pass on SOL. It would have pushed her grade up as she was on the borderline between grade.

What did she get on the Final exam?

C

I am wondering why my DD did not get the additional point. She got a C on her final exam for Alegebra Honor. And she never had a C before that. So her final grade was a B.

How would you know if was included or not? Do you know the exact score she received on her final?

Yes I know exactly what the percentage was from her final exam with out any more. Percentage added and the corresponding grade she received. No one informed me that they were supposed to add some percentage from her SOL. If they added that, it would have moved up the grade she for for her final exam.

I just asked my kids (senior and sophomore), and they said most teachers give something for a Pass Advanced, but only a few give extra for a Pass on the SOL.

If it instructed by FCPS, it should apply it all. I checked with others and pass also gets some extra point. It is bad!

It seems that it is consistent for the Pass Advanced but not the Pass. It is teacher discretion for the Pass. That is similar to teachers giving extra credit on homework, classroom participation or on tests. If your DC got a C on the final and a Pass on the SOL, I would say the final grade of B was fair Colleges ONLY see the B (final grade), they do not see the SOL nor the score on the final.

And you thought only Asians were grade obsessed. Let her focus on acquiring new knowledge and exploring new ideas not grades. Just be glad that she is engaged and learning. Grade is just one part of the learning process. Too much focus on grades will interfere with the learning process and developing and nurturing of the mind.

How do you know if I am Asian or not . This is not about being Asian , being obsessed about grades or learning. Common sense, whatever is applied needs to be applied equally for every student . If this was your child you would not comment this, it us straight forward,

What ?

Asians or Asian students experience way more "inequalities" than whites or white students so there is no need to explain about inequalities with various systems to an Asian parent. Asian parent would be very familiar with them already.

It may be unacceptable but not much can be done about it. That's the reality/price of being an invisible minority.

You say your DC got a B for the year, what grade do you think she would have received if she were given the extra 5 points on the final exam? Was she that close to a B+?

Yes could be B+ or A- and that makes a difference in GPA especially for honor.
But the pt . Is why not to give her the point even if it is a one pt.
