Would you let your 3-4 year old ride the school bus?

No. Not because it's unsafe but I don't trust there can be decent supervision. I have a little 4 year old girl, I'm not risking it.

Are you sure that there won't be carseats on the bus? I am looking at a pre-school for my DS that does frequent field trips, and I'm pretty sure their bus has 5 point harnesses built in. I haven't seen it but I assume like this:

My daycare does not use carseats. If they did the above, I would be fine with it.

I hope that public transportation will also require car sets for children. I can just imagine all the screaming about having to schlep car seats with you.

You hope that public transportation will require car seats for children, so that people can scream about having to carry car seats?

Not on I-270, no way.
Our tiny 4-year-old DD just did a field trip on a bus without seatbelts but it was all local roads and maybe a 10 minute drive so I didn't mind but if they had told me they were going any further I would have taken my child out of school that day or taken the day off to drive her.

I am concerned because there are no seat belts and car seats (obviously) and while we take the bus in the city, that's going 20 MPH for about 2 miles. Not on a fast-moving interstate. Would you let your kid go?

That is an absolute NO WAY.

Silly to take preschoolers on field trips. Not worth the risk. I'd question the adult's judgement. Do they think parents don't take their kids anywhere? Not every activity should trickle-down, and down and down.

She does for field trips but they have special kid belts type thing at her school.

School buses are safer than other modes of transport when going to school, but the data does not necessarily apply beyond that. Also, that is for children over 40 pounds. My child is 4, but weighs 35 pounds. According to NHTSA, she should be in a carseat. Daycare is putting kids three across in bus seats, and I am not okay with that. Too risky, especially for 30 miles on I-66.

Way too risky for a field trip. Totally unnecessary at this age group.

Thanks PP. That makes me feel better, as none of the other parents seem phased by it. The school is taking this trek every other week all summer. Not my kid.

Oh really? The school where I work has seat belts on all of the buses.

No way in hell I would let my 3 year old take the bus.

No, i would not. I would drive her. But I would also tell the center how dangerous this is for the other kids.

The ones who say they would let their child ride the bus have never encounters the school buses in DC on the roads.
