What are some stylish hairstyles to consider?

So what are hairstyles for stylish women in their 40's????? What style do Hip moms have in NYC and LA? Lets pretend i am not looking for practical or wash and wear....

OP, Kate Gosselin never had a bob. I don't even know how she ever got her hair to look like it did or what you would even ask a hair stylist to do, but it looked like crap.

A bob is a classic hair style. You can do a long bob, e.g.:

Finding a hair stylist who can actually cut a good bob, is another story.

How do you get anything done with your hair hanging in your face all day like it does in these pix?

This made me laugh.

In fairness, OP specifically asked for input from "hip" NYC and LA moms.

I think it's much worse to see someone much older with very long hair trying to look young and hip when a shorter cut would freshen their face and make them look younger. I saw a woman today who had to be at least 70 with hair down to her her waist, getting it dyed jet black (eyebrows to match). Then arguing with her stylist that all of her grey's were not covered - in her hair AND eyebrows! If she would have lopped about a foot off of that mane of hers and trimmed those eyebrows, rather than dyeing them, she could have taken 20 years off of her appearance. Maybe an attitude adjustment would have helped too!

Sorry to get so off topic, but so many DCUMers hate on the bob. And I don't think any of you look as good as this:

Very pretty haircut on Naomi Watts. Fresh and uncomplicated.

This. I was being sarcastic. I'm an NY mom, was sarcastic on the hip. I'm also originally from LA so does it make me also LA hip mom? I'm not sure. Anyway most moms around me have long hair which they wear in a ponytail, loose braid or chignon. Btw, nothing special about being an NY or LA mom, DC is a big city and I always see tons of stylish people when I visit. I do sense a bit of concensus here on dcum which is not common in real life. It's like there is only one kind of people here.

Hip should only be used with the NYC mom.

Really? I feel that LA moms are pretty hip, too.
