We bought with Redfin, and I will sell with them when I have the opportunity. The benefits I see:
-Redfin refund = you pay less commission -They leverage technology to your benefit, which can speed things up and keep things on track (including things like e-signing documents and their online "deal room" that keeps you informed on the entire process and notifies you of significant dates'milestones) -They have a team of people that are assigned to your transaction, all of which work together to streamline the process -Because they don't work off traditional commission, I felt like that wasn't their only motivation in completing my transaction -Just about everyone uses redfin as their real estate search engine We worked with a traditional agent before we switched to redfin, and it was like a breath of fresh air to make the switch. It was like our traditional agent, like someone else said, was stuck in the 80's. I knew about properties before she knew about properties, I could do my own market research on comparables, etc. (all using Redfin, btw). |

Brokers just want to make the quick sale, not necessarily the best price (again as discussed by freakonomics). |
So bummed we didn't use redfin a few years ago when we bought. Could have used that money back.

How many? What interaction? How do you judge being outclassed? |
There maybe one or two stellar Realtors that really make it rain. I concede that a good salesman can be effective and creative. However, just like picking stocks or wunderkind mutual fund managers, most of us can't really pick that exemplary realtor out of thin air. So just like we will come out ahead with low cost index funds, the low cost real estate agent will be to our economic benefit. If you have believe you are prescient enough to find those exemplary Realtors, by all means, just know the odds are against you. |
| I guess it depends on the market. It our area, many properties sell before they hit the mls and redfin ($1million plus homes). For this reason, I wouldn't dream of relying on a redfin agent to buy, but I also wouldn't use 90 percent of the traditional agents in my area, there are only a select few that are really connected. I'd be more inclined to consider them for selling, but again, prefer my very well connected agent. |

6 or 7. They lost bids, seem befuddled by negotiations, were slow on the uptake, and generally didn't know what they were doing. |
See, a RedFin agent would be stupid enough to compare stocks with real estate. Please explain how transactions involving liquid and illiquid assets are comparable. |

http://www.redfin.com/sell-a-home/how-redfin-works It also states that their total commission, buyer's commission included, is 4.5 percent. In a seller's market, why would you use them to sell your house when they are flying off the market. |

OP, the one thing I would caution you on would be to make sure you look at comps and pricing yourself and don't solely rely on the agent for this, whether you use Redfin or another agent. On the buying side, I don't think the Redfin agent we're working with has the depth of knowledge in the specific area we're looking at to adequately evaluate price. I don't blame them for this as DW and I have been looking at a very specific price point in a very specific part of W. Springfield for about 9 months so we can tell very easily if things are priced right. But, like 12:52 said, I'm not sure a traditional agent would be better at picking the right price points within the narrow band of house types we've been looking at. |

reposting with better format: that's an awful lot of transactions in the last few years (since Redfin has been somewhat prominent) for someone that is not an agent. also if you are just a frequent buyer and seller, why wouldn't you use the same agent over and over again, which would imply a statement like "every Redfin agent I've encountered has been outclassed by my agent" not "their competition." hmmm ... very very strange - why don't I believe you |
