getting priced out of dc--where to go?

11:39 here again. Also, I have a house with a HUGE yard for a little more that what you're paying, and the neighborhood kids play together on the sidewalk out front. Greenbelt is another terrific suggestion.

14:32 here. I suspect there's a tiny bit of code in this post. Yes, there is some crime. Takoma Park borders both the District and PG County and perps tend to flee into those jurisdictions. If you take common-sense precautions, however, there's not a great deal of risk. It's such a close-knit community that people tend to watch out for one another pretty strongly. If you want close proximity to DC and some diversity, as well as affordability for renters, you're going to have some crime -- as I'm sure OP knows.

I was just reffering to the MS-13 hub in Hyattsville and Tacoma Park.

Have you tried Chinatown, Shaw or SW? They have some really nice apartments and reasonable prices and are walking distance to downtown. You woud proabably have to do out of bounds for school though.

I hear you. That's far-out Takoma Park, geographically; Langley Park, actually. If OP seeks to get by without a car, she'll want to be within walking distance to Metro. That's very far from the MS-13 activity, which really centers on Langley Park. Just stay away from New Hampshire Avenue in looking for a place to live, and stick close to Metro.

John Thomson is downtown/Chinatown and has a good reputation. There was a nice write-up about it in the WaPo not too long ago.
