MCPS Has Changed Position on 504 Plans

My child, who has an IEP for an Other Health Impairment, currently is recovering from a concussion. The school has failed to formalize her new needs in the IEP or put the doctors recommended supports into a 504 Plan. She is not getting the recommended support for her increased cognitive difficulties. The non-modified workload and resulting symptoms has caused my child's medical team to reconsider the health impact of sending her to school. As far as the doctor's are concerned, the risk of prolonged injury is too great and they have recommended I pull her from school for the remainder of her recovery.

If you are in MCPS, I would be very interested in exchanging stories with you - my DC had a very similar experience with lack of cooperation from the school slowing DC's recovery. The good news is, one year later, DC is fully recovered and got accomodations/ program mods. Please contact me at zakrit@aol.com if you're interested, and I will share what worked and what didn't for us in making the school comply.

I wonder if this is true for IEPs too. I hear stories of MCPS making excuses not to use accoms because child is getting a C or better.

My son has never failed anything (in fact, is a B+ student) yet he has an IEP with services and accommodations. We have never experienced what you suggest is happening.

You are one of the lucky ones.

What part of the county are you located in where getting a 504 is so hard? We asked and were had one in place
The very next month when a meeting was available.

No big deal. The school was very happy to set it up for
My daughter.
