how to tell boss I'm leaving

Get the offer letter in hand first. Then meet with your boss and tell him/her verbally. Don't come to the meeting with a letter. Your boss will decide how he/she wants to handle communication with staff and when. You can provide a letter or an email later that day. It should take you about 3 minutes to write the resignation letter and it should not be long. You can pull a standard letter off the internet.

Don't make this a broadway production when it's a fairly simple thing. You'd be surprised at how quickly your team will plan for your departure and coverage of your work.

+1

Especially on the part about letting your boss handle the communication with other staff. Last time I resigned, my boss asked that I not share the news with others until the next day.

Don't tell your boss until you get the offer letter.

ALSO, make sure you have anything you might want or need in the future off your work computer before you talk to your boss. I have had friends resign who were then immediately blocked from the network and escorted out.
