My husband and I make dinner most nights. The kids have to take turns setting and clearing the table, loading the dishwasher, and washing the things that don't go in the dishwasher (plastic containers, pots, etc.). One kid sets and clears and the other cleans/washes up. Then it switches the next time. They also have to unload the dishwasher and put stuff away. And I've recently started making them do their own laundry, and they mow the lawn. We have a cleaning service, and my mom had a daily housekeeper when I was growing up, but we still learned to do those things. I tell my kids they don't live in a hotel. They enjoy a fantastic life -- lovely home, private school, great vacations -- and want for nothing, but they have to contribute.
