Really?

My child hs been in GT magnets since elementary school and I would NEVER allow him to use that term.

Don't worry! It is not one-sided. The "Normies" call the Magnet kids too - - - I think those are "Humanidork" referring kids in Humanity program and "SciNerd" (something like that, sorry can't remember the exact name) referring to the science kids.

I hope their moms don't use those terms either.

Do you have a child at any of these schools? I'd love to hear your experiences.

I actually do not, yet. My kids go to a school that feeds into the Argyle/Parkland/Loiederman group, though, and my husband teaches at Clemente, AND my friend teaches at Parkland. so that's my perspective. The "normies" thing is absolutely real, and my DH has talked about it to the extent that he would NOT want our child to be in a magnet that divides the students in that way. He teaches a special and has classes from both groups, and sees the division as a negative, but that's just his perspective as a teacher. The students themselves (from both groups) are well-behaved and most do well in his class.

My oldest kid is not headed to middle school next year, but is talking about which school is preferred. Parkland is the "nerd" school (maybe a good sign?), Loiederman is for girls. Nothing for Argyle just yet, but I'm sure that will show up in the coming year. We're not planning to move, and probably wouldn't be interested in applying for any other magnets, so we will make the decision to be happy sending our kids to one of those three middle schools, however they decide.

And I'll just say it, because I know it matters to some people here. We are white.

Thank you for your perspective. My son is interested in the Arglye program, but living outside of the school's boundary we know very little about it.

My middle schooler is on the math team, and at every math meet Parkland killed every other school and had a much bigger team than the other schools.

I have no personal experience with Argyle, but I can tell you this: I work in the news media, and in my world these days, young people with digital design skills rule. If that is where your son's interest lies, encourage it! The future belongs to those kids.

Does anybody know what percentage of students come from outside the consortium through the Choice program? The programs sound great, although the transportation would probably be too challenging for us.

No magnet kid at TPMS calls kids 'normies'. Must md a Clemente thing. That is horrible!

Agreed. This is not a TPMS thing.

I have experience with Parkland, and what I can tell you is that you will get as much out of it as you're willing to put into it. There are opportunities for rigorous coursework (especially in 8th grade), and you can absolutely find your own crowd. I had a great time there and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Yep, not a TPMS thing. Maybe b/c a significant number of magnet kids came from Piney (both in and out of boundary), the separation doesn't seem to be as great as what I've heard at Clemente and Eastern.

The names are there, but it is just a side item. Most of the kids do not call each other with those names.
By the way. The Math Science kids are called "Cyborg". Actually they kind of like it. It has a cool ring.

How rigorous is the Parkland Magnet curriculum? How many of the students who take the magnet courses get into the Blair magnet or any of the other application based high school programs?
Anonymous
I can tell you 50% of Blair's Magnet is made up of Takoma Park Magnet program. No one else represented as heavily.
Anonymous
Yes, most of Blair's magnet consists of TPMS. But since RC doesn't feed there, most of Poolesville must consist of RC.
