IVF...no heartbeat at 6weeks, 3 days

Anonymous
" I have heard that you should not go in to check on the heartbeat until you are 8 weeks pregnant b/c before 8 weeks, it might not be possible to hear the heartbeat even though everything might be fine and that leads to a lot of confusion. Best of Luck to you."

When you do fertility treatments, you are monitored more closely, which is why they schedule ultrasounds early than 8 weeks, if only to see if sac and not a heartbeat. They also do it to make sure that there is no etopic pregnancy, a potentially dangerous condition that is more common when doing fertility treatments. So it is not an IVF patient's option to wait until 8 weeks to do an ultrasound.

We did IUI and my RE was surprised to see the heartbeat at my 6w3d u/s. He said they often don't and warned us before even beginning the u/s that we might not see it but we had great beta numbers (not as high as yours though) so we shouldn't worry. He tried to show it to us but I couldn't really make it out and we couldn't get an accurate read on how many beats per minute. At my next u/s at 7w4d you couldn't miss it.

I know how hard it is to trust in your body after going through infertility and the subsequent treatments and it is impossible for you not to worry. My fingers are crossed that you've just got a late bloomer there!

I got pg after IVF and had an early U/S--6 weeks, and again at 8 weeks and couldn't see the heartbeat. The MD just checked to see that things were developing properly/growing at right rate. But when I was released to my Ob and went in at about 10 weeks, it was there(via u/s, doppler still too hard to pinpoint). I am now 9 months along....

So, OP, I think it is too early and try not to be worried (easier said than done). Your doctor should have told you this is completely normal. If you are really concerned (so that you are not sleeping and stressing), I would call your RE or your OB and talk about it--he/she may even have you come in and take another look and reassure you.

HTH. Good luck to you.
