Have you thought about opening up DCUM like forums in other areas? We are thinking about relocating to Atlanta and the closest thing we can find is city-data which is much different than DCUM.
Offshoot of this question, how much time does it take to run/mod something like DCUM? I assume thats a major factor in opening up forums for other cities. |
Are there some thread titles you just never click on (unless someone brings it to your attention?) Just things that don't interest you?
Or do you sort of try to read almost everything, dipping in and out, just to have a flavor? |
Jeff,
What do you like to do for fun? |
We constantly think about opening DCUM's elsewhere. However, my concept is not to open an entirely new site, but to branch off from this one. I am working on another way of organizing forums so that we can have more of them. Then, I will probably create regional forums so, for instance, people from the West coast can have their own forum. Then, if sufficient traffic builds up, we can create, for instance, Los Angeles and San Francisco forums. Then, sub-categorize them as demands calls for it. It's a lot of time but adding new forums doesn't necessarily mean more time. |
I normally only read topics that interest me. However, based on experience there are certain topics that I know will need attention. So, I read those just to keep an eye on them and try to be proactive if possible. But, mostly, for moderation purposes, I only read threads that are reported. |
Are you really Jeff or his wife (Marie? Maria? I forget). I thought I read a long time ago that Jeff's DW took over monitoring this board because it was/became a full time job. I sometimes read Jeff's posts and wonder if it's really you or your wife |
Read, watch a few TV shows (Game of Thrones, Vikings, almost no network TV). I am into motor sports and I play guitar. I'm also learning tin whistle and I really enjoy Irish music (though I am not Irish at all). |
I'm Jeff. Maria moderates the mailing list and helps out with the website a lot. However, she doesn't like posting on the website very much. |
Do you every post/reply anonymously? |
Once when I wanted to ask a question involving one of our sons. But, otherwise, no. If I have learned anything it is that many posters on DCUM can recognize anyone based on writing style. I would be terribly embarrassed to be outed by one of them. |
Jeff,
What other sorts of books do you like? |
I like historical fiction and have been reading a lot by authors such as Bernard Cornwell, Nigel Tranter, Maurice Druon, Sharon Kay Penman, and Elizabeth Chadwick. I also read the entire Game of Thrones series last year. I am currently reading a "Lion of Ireland" by Morgan Llywelyn. Some non-fiction I've read recently includes "The Warmth of Other Suns" and "Snow-Storm in August". I'm trying to work my way through a bunch of books about the history of Washington, DC. |
Please do. Pretty please. It would be a lot easier to justify not being able to kick my habit if I still had local forums! |
Are there a lot of 'repeat' posters? those who post information saying one thing in one thread (ie I have a 12 year old daughter) and then give info in another (I have four kids)? |
I absolutely won't hold you to this, but can you give an estimate of a time-frame? When do you foresee being able to roll this out? Is there anything we can do to help? love, a very eager SF-er. |
