US News isn't the only ranking

Maybe in the US, but higher education has become a global commodity and the international rankings now matter a lot. They are quite different from US News which is designed to see how much schools approximate Harvard. Caltech is number 1 worldwide.

No it's not. Harvard is #1 internationally. US news rankings matter because they fit preconceptions, they look true.

no, i didn't check the link, i am familiar with times rankings. it's not good. shanghai list is much better. check out that one.

Shanghai's rankings are rubbish. They seem to be designed to get certain results like USNews. When some researchers tried to reproduce the results using Shanghai's supposed methodology, they could not. The Times methodology is superior and the results undoubtedly are too.

Use whatever rankings you like for whatever purpose you like, but just know that the US News rankings are the only rankings that drive up (or down) applications. With few exceptions, colleges care most about the US News rankings.
