pp again. There is a place called Oohhs & Aahhs Soul Food on U street w/ good reviews -- but I cant vouch for it, havent tried it yet. |
Not particularly. I like Mac & cheese but find the rest just okay. I certainly wouldn't blow my diet for it. |
Good responses...making this topic has now made me hungry lol |
I can respect that@diet...I watch what I eat more times then not also |
I'm afraid I do not. I am a New Yorker and grew up eating lasagne, sausage and peppers, stuffed mushrooms, etc at family functions. I don't mean to be rude but since I've move to the South I've been to a few "famous" places to eat Soul Food and also tried it at people's houses... it has not won me over. The veggies come across as overcooked, Okra, I could throw up. I never was a fan of mac and cheese (even as a kid - yellow, cheese, ew) and I don't like fried chicken (long story, my front teeth have issues and I can't pick off the bone.) So, I'm sure some people love it but I'd chose ANY other cuisine if given the choice. |
Another white New Englander here: yes, really like soul food. I got into it while living in Chicago and I like both real soul food and the vegan versions (Soul vegetarian, how I miss you!). I tried to get some of the older women I knew in Chicago to teach me some of their secrets, but I could never get them to take me seriously. |
What borough are you from..Manhattan? Its some good spots threw out city with good soul food |
I am white and Southern. Not only do I love soul food, I cook it too.
My son's friend said he liked eating at our house because we cook like black folk. LOL. |
How do you know that there are not a lot of black people on this website? Maybe the ones that are on here do not speak like you would or have the lifestyle that you have. |
Love it. Lived in New Orleans for many years and really, really, really miss the food. |
I like fried chicken, BBQ (chicken now because I no longer eat pork or beef), Mac and cheese (OP, the traditional soul food Mac and cheese isn't creamy right?), potato salad, corn bread, and I like other southern sides like coleslaw and chow chow and fried okra, but I'm not sure if they're "soul food." I don't love collards and yams.
For the health conscious: has anyone tried Everlasting Life, the new vegan soup food restaurant in Takoma? Or Woodlands? |
White southerner here. I love it; it's just traditional home cooking to me. |
Yes. I am a white southerner. Grew up eating these foods. |
I am a Southerner and white. Everything you mention was just Sunday dinner for us with my great aunts and uncles. Whatever you call it, I love it all! |
+1! |
