OP here. 13:55, I grew up in a house without a disposal, and I never want to empty a nasty mesh sink strainer full of old food bits again.

OK, new disposal, power cord, and dishwasher plug in kit ordered from Amazon Prime. Should be here tomorrow!

Side topic - if you have a split sink (large and small), which sink should the garbage disposal be under?

Countertop companies are telling me it should be under the small sink which doesn't make sense to me since I do all my cleaning in the large sink.
