It's been a while, but generally, I think they can do whatever they want.

Any young lawyers want to chime in here?

I don't think it's riparian rights when you are only dealing with runoff.

OP, check this out and see what rule your state follows.

yes - i was thinking of the "common enemy rule." that site says DC doesn't follow it, maybe OP lives in DC.

No kidding. No one likes you, OP. You are looking for a target and everyone knows it. Give it up.

If you are so put out by it, pay for a lawyer. If you can't afford it, STFU.

If you don't like my post, keep it moving a**hole.

OP, I have similar problem, so I can feel your pain
My next door neighbors installed French drain with output to my backyard, so now every time it rains I have a my little river and a pond on my backyard. Have no idea yet how to address this issue. I'd like to have a yard, not a messy swamp. Any suggestion?

French drain back to their yard

I wish it would be that simple

Anyway, question is - do I need to somehow communicate with my neighbors regarding the issue? Anything I would do on my yard will likely affect the flow on their yard

Dam the drain so it backs up in their yard? Somehow make it flow back. I'd tell them first you need to deflect their run off from flooding your property and wanted to give them an option to redirect their drain before you do anything

Get a bigger yard, so it doesn't get swamped that easily.

No, it's too rewarding to make fun of you.

If it is Montgomery Cty, they will do nothing, they don't get involved with neighbor disputes. Our neighbor's sump pump drained directly into our property, I called the county and they said they couldn't do anything about it -sorry.

OP, we're having a similar issue in Arlington. As long as they followed all the permitting requirements, we're learning that there is little we can do about the negative impact to our property.

I honestly don't want to create any tension with them, we just moved in. Just don't know where to start dealing with it

Install a noisy water pump and pump all the water into her basement. This will teach her a lesson.

That's awful! What discourteous neighbors. We're finding that our yard is soggy- clay souks and low in places, and I'm investigating landscaping options. There are plants that will suck up a lot of water! Where do you live? Some counties have a watershed stewards program where volunteers will come out and assess your property and make recommendations for suitable landscaping to help deal with excess water. Thinking of scheduling a consult myself.....
