Do undergrads want these majors? Yeah, I'm 18 and I want to be a hedge fund mogul who screws the rest of the world and lives in Greenwich or the UES. Yuck.

18 year olds that grow up with lots of money, probably not. I mean, sure if one had a trust fund, majoring in art history in yale or anthropology would be more self actualizing but everyone doesn't have that luxury.

but in the last 10 years there has been a lot more interest at a young age in stuff like this because recruiting is so competitive.

NYC is also very expensive. It's a drag to be broke there, so if finances are tight, that's a factor worth considering.

Considering she is coming from Eastern Europe, I would think that it would be much easier to find a community in NYC vs. New Haven and maybe avoid intense homesickness which could derail the whole thing.

You know how grown men waste time dickering about who the best basketball player ever was? That's kind of what it's like when people argue about whether Yale or Columbia is more prestigious. GMAFB.

Went to both. Would definitely recommend Yale over Columbia for undergrad.

I went to Columbia for grad school and it was great, but no way would I go there for undergrad if Yale was also an option. Wouldn't matter whether I was from Bethesda or Belgrade, Yale is pretty amazing. Going to Columbia for undergrad would be like going to university in Europe. Kind of defeats the point of coming to the U.S.

The answer is so obvious I can't even believe it's a question. Yale.

My 18 YO wants to be a hedge fund mogul. Seriously. But plans to go the MBA route rather than an undergrad in financial engineering (is that really a thing???).

You must be so proud.

Yale is a top Ivy. New Haven generally sucks and still has a violent crime problem that is disproportionate.

Yale no question. Lots of people in my family went there so I've spent time there and even though on its face new haven sucks, people love Yale. I think the residential college system is great, and there seems to be a lot going on on campus.

It's really easy to take the commuter train for cheap into nyc for fun on the weekends if she wants to.

If Columbia gave her more money, she can contact Yale and see if they will up their offer.

Also new haven is supposedly way nicer now than it used to be
