At my work it seems to be somewhat position-based. If you're assigned to a high profile new project everyone gives you accolades and bonuses. If you're a regular team member on an established team/project you can go unrecognized by the company at large for years even if you're a good performer.

In my office, it appears that ass-kissing, talking over others, being rude to those who serve no "purpose" to you, and pretending to know everything will get you pretty far.

+1, at least in some areas of my organization.
