Oooh! I suggested the Reynolds center without thinking of the NBM's playroom! Great suggestion-- and maybe even more appropriate for a small toddler.

My son used to like to go to lunch at Teaism because he could watch the koi downstairs.

Ella's Wood Fired is great, and definitely worth a visit, but you probably would have had to wait longer for lunch - it's pretty popular. So don't feel bad for doing Gordon Biersch this time.

You said you're not looking for parks yet, but...

* Clarendon metro - there's a nice playground, Lyon Village playground, that's a long-ish walk from Clarendon Metro - on Highland street just South of Lee highway. (there's also a cute little children's clothing/toy store next to the Gold's Gym.)

* East Falls Church - There's a little park up the hill from East Falls Church metro, Benjamin Banneker Park, off the W&OD trail, with a creek where you can look for tadpoles.

* Rosslyn - You can walk to Iwo Jima from Rosslyn metro; there's space to play there and a Ruby Tuesday's nearby, plus Cosi, McD's, Burger King, Red Hot & Blue, Piola (pizza) and Cafe Asia. Rosslyn is also near Gateway Park, which has little pools w/ fountains.) On a really nice day, you could also walk from Rosslyn metro about 0.5 of a mile to Roosevelt Island, and explore the trails and the river. (you could easily grab food from Cosi for a picnic.)

* Foggy Bottom - Washington Circle is easily accessible to Foggy Bottom Metro, and you could eat at the Friday's on I st. afterward, or the GW student center food court. (and/or hit the bowling alley on the top floor of the GW student center.)

* Virginia Square - metro is near a small park across Wilson Blvd.
